# How firms get recommended
> Why a firm appears under Recommended, why one you'd expect is missing, and how to tune it.
When you log a call, the firm picker offers a **Recommended** list rather than
all your firms. Understanding what drives it saves a lot of "why isn't this
company here?"
## What gets a firm recommended
A firm appears under **Recommended** when:
* **Its fields of expertise overlap the internship's.** This is the main filter.
A firm with none recorded is never recommended, however suitable it is.
* **It hasn't already been called for this internship.** Once you log a call
against this internship, the firm drops off the list so nobody calls twice.
Calls against *other* internships don't exclude it.
* **It isn't marked Don't Contact**, and hasn't been deactivated.
Ordering is then: firms whose fields match, cold streaks pushed down, and the
firm's rating for this internship. How recently you spoke is shown but isn't
sorted on.
Firms that don't qualify aren't hidden. Switch to **All firms** and search by
name, contact, workplace, field of expertise or address.
## Cold streaks
A firm you've called repeatedly that never says yes gets demoted, marked with a
snowflake and a **Skip / Cold streak** badge. The point is to stop your team
working through the same closed doors every season.
A firm has to fail **both** checks to count as a cold streak:

| **Lookback window** | 24 months | How far back to look. A firm with an **Intern Approved** call inside this window stays warm. |
| **Calls before silence counts** | 5 lifetime calls | How many times you must have tried before silence means anything. |
Two things follow that aren't obvious:
* **Silence alone is never a streak.** A firm you've called twice with no result
hasn't been properly tried yet — it's below the lifetime-call threshold.
* **A firm with no calls at all inside the window doesn't get the badge**, though
it is still sorted downwards if it's over the lifetime threshold. So a firm you
called heavily years ago sits low in the list without being labelled a cold
streak.
## Tuning it
A Firm Admin can change both numbers under **Settings** > **Firm call policy**.
The page scores three sample firms against your current settings and updates as
you adjust them, so you can see the effect before saving.
* **A shorter lookback** (say 12 months) flags firms sooner. Last year's wins
still count; the year before doesn't.
* **A longer lookback** (say 36 months) is more forgiving, and suits longer
sales cycles.
* **Raising the call threshold** only flags firms you've genuinely pushed.
Lowering it flags them sooner.
The tooltip explaining a cold streak says "in 2 years" whatever you set the
lookback to. Trust the number on this settings page, not the tooltip.
## Troubleshooting
**"No recommended firms — they're all already called or no FOE matches."**
Every suitable firm has been called for this internship, none carry a matching
field of expertise, or the remainder are marked **Don't Contact**. Use **All
firms** to search directly.
**A firm you place with every year is marked as a cold streak.**
You've called it inside the lookback window without a positive outcome, and it's
over the lifetime-call threshold. Logging the call that actually secured the
placement — with **Intern Approved** — clears it.
**A firm keeps reappearing after you've called it.**
The call wasn't logged. Only a recorded call removes a firm from the list.
